There are two pieces, they do hook together but they don't have to be connected all of the time. There is the main part of the train, which has a bell, buttons, and various other things that my toddler can interact with. My toddlers (twins) especially like the ball that spins and the little flip up character on the side. I did think it was kind of odd that the battery cover was a different color than the rest of the surrounding plastic, but it makes it easy to locate where the batteries go. The on/off switch is actually on the side, which is nice, you don't have to flip the toy upside down to get the lights and music to work (bonus!). There is a string to pull the train along.
The caboose is completely non-electric. It just follows along with the main part of the train. It does have 4 little animals who each have a different shape to their base, so only that critter can fit in that specific space. I thought it was really cute to watch my toddler pulling around the train with the different animals on it. There is a frog, chicken, cow and a dog.
The part that I really like is that it lights up and has music to go with the lights. You just flip the switch on, and here a little chime to let you know it's on. You can make it sound by pulling it, which is nice for toddlers that like to take things with them. If the toy is stationary, just press one of the buttons on the top for sound. Not only does this keep the toddler's attention, but it keeps mine without being one of those irritating baby toys.
Pros:
*Has a lot going on
*Noise when pulled or buttons pushed
*Has shape sorting in caboose with different animals
*On/off switch is on the side, instead of the bottom
Cons:
*Pull string is somewhat short
This is a really interesting toy, it is a great toy with or without batteries, although I definitely think the twins prefer it when the batteries are in it! It's somewhat loud, flashy, but not annoying, which is hard to find in a toddler toy (you can usually get 1 or 2 of those things, but rarely all 3!).

This is so cute. What little one would not enjoy having it. Some adults would enjoy it too.
